CAGIS Researchers Present Mangrove Studies at IALE 2025 in Raleigh, NC

The Center for Applied GIScience (CAGIS) proudly participated in the International Association for Landscape Ecology—North American Regional Chapter (IALE 2025) held in Raleigh, North Carolina from April 14 – 17, 2025. This conference brought together leading scientists and practitioners to explore innovations in landscape ecology, with a strong focus this year on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in ecological research. CAGIS researchers contributed two work showcasing the integration of Geospatial analytics and AI in mangrove inventory.
- Dr. Wenwu Tang presented on “The Use of Geospatial Artificial Intelligence in the Study of Mangrove Inventory,” demonstrating how advanced AI methods can enhance the accuracy, scalability, and efficiency of mangrove monitoring by leveraging geospatial big data.
- Dr. Tianyang Chen delivered a talk on “Mapping Mangrove Inventory in the Dominican Republic Using Geospatial Analytics”, highlighting the use of spatial analytical workflows to support mangrove inventory with a spotlight in El Morro and Estero Balsa national parks in Dominica Republic.
Session Highlights

Our involvement in this session underscored one of CAGIS ongoing missions to bridge the gap between geospatial science and ecological application through innovative AI techniques. The discussions during IALE 2025 demonstrated the growing importance of AI as a transformative tool in landscape ecology—particularly in addressing complex environmental challenges.
We thank IALE for hosting such an engaging and collaborative event and look forward to continuing our contributions to the evolving field of landscape ecology.
