At the invitation of Dr. Yao Li, Associate Director of Research at the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science (CAGIS), Dr. Shih-Lung Shaw visited UNC Charlotte and delivered a seminar titled “Human-Centered GIScience and GeoAI” on October 9, 2026.

Dr. Shaw, Chancellor’s Professor and Alvin and Sally Beaman Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, presented as part of the Department of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences’ Fall 2026 Speaker Series. His talk examined the role of human intelligence, reasoning, and decision-making in GIScience and geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI), highlighting the importance of keeping people at the center of advances in geospatial technology.

During his visit, Dr. Shaw also toured CAGIS and BATT CAVE. These visits provided an opportunity to introduce the university’s research facilities and share perspectives across geospatial science and engineering.

We thank Dr. Shaw for sharing his expertise and Dr. Li for organizing the visit.
