MangroveCarbon
MangroveCarbon is a GIS-based analysis tool for the spatially explicit estimation of mangrove biomass and carbon based on NASA Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) canopy height data and mangrove coverage data from US Geological Survey (USGS). The objective in developing this application was to facilitate relative comparisons of mangrove biomass and carbon stocks at regional or national levels. The tool provides a convenient basis for planning and assessments in Africa.
The MangroveCarbon tool was developed using ESRI ArcGIS and Python. Using this GIS-based tool, cell- and class-level mangrove biomass and carbon can be derived. This GIS-based tool supports the estimation of mangrove metrics within either a single region (e.g., a country) or across multiple sub-regions. The MangroveCarbon tool was developed at the Center for Applied Geographic Information Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Development team:
Jiyang Shi (leading developer), Wenpeng Feng, and Wenwu Tang.
